The dark side of an ego-blog

For English readers, sorry for the delay;)

Poses, different places and lots, lots of clothes. These are some of the keywords related to a breaking phenomenon in the fashion blogsphere: egoblogs. Their owners are responsible for creating original looks with many garments we already have in our closets, what implies they´re a huge source of inspiration.

Many of these girls are worlwide known, but an extra task must be added to the personal style, a task that often keeps a low profile. What is behind a click of the mouse to pick a picture? And above all, what is behind this kind of blogs?

Not only the moon of Pink Foyd has a dark side, but egoblogs too. They´re not expert photographers. Instead, they work in engineering or advertisment for a living. Before the creation of the blog, some of them already had a previous knowledge of photography, like Diego, Collage Vintage photographer, thanks to a subject of his degree. As time goes by, they have been developing a hobby they try to improve day a day: "I read photography blogs, magazines, search on the Internet... but the way I learn more is by trying different things and making mistakes" declares Pablo, of Soft&Grey.

Altough they all agree with the fact that their photographer skills are getting better, they also say they still have a long way to go. Blake Brysha, from the USA blog On the Racks, claims that "I don’t think I’ve ever been thrilled with the pictures I shoot and by the time I load them up on the computer, I always notice something that I could have done differently to make them improve." For this online marketing expert, "it’s human nature to be overly critical of your own work, no matter what you do, but I also think it’s how we getter better", a point of view that Pablo, from Soft&Grey, also shares: "what in the beginning I tought it was a good result, right now it´s unacceptable for me".

Sometimes is the own blogger the one who teaches the photographer how to take the first steps, like the case of Estefa, from Soft&Grey, or Cristina Morales, author of the blog La Petite Nymphéa. For María, Cristina´s little sister and also photographer of the blog, posts have been very useful because she has learnt that "behind a pic there´s always a previous thought and several steps to follow; not always the first shoot is the right one". And in this phrase agree all of them because they have stated that at least 100 photos are taken for each post. 

Plenty of these images we see when surfing the net are pretty gorgeous, but to the talent or the learning of these amateur photographers we must join a good support material. For some of them a reflex camera is essential for a good quality result, but others like Blake Brysha prefer a personal style rather than a good camera: "More than anything I just think you need to find some sort of style of your own, own it, and constantly try to improve it, no matter what hardware you’re working with", refering to alternative materials such as smartphones or tablets.

While taking a picture, we must bear in mind what we are photographing. According to all the declarations, poses are chosen by the blogger, what gives a natural vibe to the photo. Looks are chosen by the models too, tough Diego and Pablo coincide that "they give some advice when they are asked about".

The choice of places is another kettle of fish. Living in big cities like Madrid or New York are a great advantage because "there are endless posibilites", as Diego from Collage Vintage says. However, as María remarks, the fact of looking for alternative things for a blog is a "big headache", especially the location: "my sister doesn´t want (and I agree with her) her posts to be tedious, or to take pictures in crowded places".

All these aspects contribute to make a blog successfully. A success with many hours of hard work behind that has provoked not only being fond of the blog, like all photographers have admit, but also their own  involvement into the fashion world, especially into the blogsphere.

But a question has to be considered: which is the cause of sharing this passion with a fashion addicted, a person who is mad about clothes? In many cases, the photographer is the own couple, so the answer is really easy: the love to the other person, as Pablo suggest: "you can´t understand a personality without that "something" it belongs to". Nontheless, it´s a kind of love that goes a step further, as Blake Brysha asserts: "it´s really a matter of loving what you are doing and who you´re doing it with". This is the distinctive that gives sense to a blog. And, after all, what contributes to make it unique in the whole world.

Pictures from,  La Petite Nymphéa, Soft&Grey, Collage Vintage and On the Racks are the favourite ones or they are in the favourite sets of the respective photographers.

La cara oculta de un (ego)blog

Poses, lugares diferentes, anécdotas divertidas. Y kilos, kilos de ropa. Ésas son algunas de las señas de identidad de un fenómeno con cada vez mayor repercusión dentro del mundo de la moda: las egobloggers. Sus responsables pueden crear originales looks con prendas que tenemos ya en el armario, por lo que suponen una fuente inagotable de inspiración. 

Muchas de ellas son reconocidas en todo el mundo, pero a su estilo propio se le suma un trabajo que a menudo pasa desapercibido. ¿Qué hay detrás de un click de ratón para guardar una imagen? Y sobre todo, ¿qué se esconde detrás de un blog de este tipo? 

La cara oculta de un egoblog está habitada por los fotógrafos. No se ganan la vida por ir con la cámara en la mano, sino que son creativos o ingenieros, entre otras profesiones. Algunos de ellos poseían antes de la creación del blog algún conocimiento previo, como es el caso de Diego, fotógrafo de Collage Vintage, gracias a una asignatura de la carrera, pero con el tiempo han ido desarrollando un hobby en el que ellos mismos profundizan y mejoran día a día: “leo blogs de fotografía, revistas, busco en foros, pero sobre todo voy aprendiendo gracias a mis propios errores y pruebas” declara Pablo, encargado de captar las imágenes de Soft&Grey.

Y aunque suelen coincidir en que desde que se abrió el respectivo blog han mejorado mucho, reconocen que todavía les queda un largo camino por recorrer. Por su parte, Blake Brysha, del blog norteamericano Onthe Racks, afirma que nunca se ha sentido especialmente “entusiasmado” con las fotografías que ha tomado, y cada vez que las carga en el ordenador nota “algo diferente que podría hacerlas mejorar”. Para este experto en marketing, “está en la naturaleza humana ser excesivamente crítico con el trabajo propio, es la forma de mejorar”, punto en el que coincide con Pablo, de Soft&Grey: “lo que en los comienzos me parecía bueno, ahora no lo suelo ver aceptable”. 

Además, en algunas ocasiones es la propia blogger la que ha servido al fotógrafo para dar los primeros pasos, como es el caso de Estefa, de Soft&Grey, o de Cristina Morales, autora de La Petite Nymphéa. A María, la hermana pequeña de Cristina y a la vez fotógrafa del blog, las sesiones le han enseñado que “tras una fotografía siempre hay una reflexión previa y unos pasos a seguir, y que una foto buena no se consigue a la primera”. Y en este punto coinciden todos, porque afirman que para cada post se puede llegar a tomar hasta 100 fotografías. 

Muchas de las imágenes que vemos en estos egoblogs son espectaculares, pero al talento o aprendizaje de estos fotógrafos amateur se le suma como es lógico, un buen material. Para algunos resulta imprescindible el uso de cámaras réflex para un trabajo de calidad, pero para otros como Blake Brysha lo importante es “encontrar un estilo propio y tratar de mejorarlo, independientemente de los aparatos con los que se esté trabajando”, haciendo referencia a alternativas como smartphones o tablets. 

En el proceso de fotografiar, también hay que tener en cuenta lo fotografiado. Las poses son elegidas por la propia modelo, según coinciden casi todos, lo que proporciona naturalidad a la imagen. Los looks también son elegidos por ellas, aunque Diego o Pablo coinciden que “aconsejan puntualmente cuando se lo piden”. 

Los lugares elegidos son otro cantar. Vivir en ciudades grandes como Madrid o Nueva York supone una gran ventaja porque “las posibilidades son infinitas”, como dice Diego, de Collage Vintage. Sin embargo, tal y como reconoce María, el hecho de buscar hacer cosas diferentes es un auténtico “quebradero de cabeza”, especialmente la localización: “mi hermana no quiere (y estoy de acuerdo con ella) que sus posts resulten monótonos, o no quiere hacer las fotos en lugares muy concurridos”. 

Todos estos aspectos contribuyen al éxito de un blog. Un éxito que lleva muchas horas de trabajo detrás y que ha provocado no solo el cariño hacia el propio blog, como reconocen todos, sino también la propia participación en mayor o menor medida, en el mundo de la moda, sobre todo en la blogosfera. 

No obstante, cabe hacerse una pregunta: ¿cuál es la causa de compartir esta pasión con una persona “adicta” a la ropa? En muchos de los casos el fotógrafo es la propia pareja, así que la respuesta sería clara: el amor hacia la persona, como dice Pablo: “no puedes entender una personalidad, sin todo eso que la constituye”. Sin embargo, es un tipo de amor que va un paso más allá, como declara Blake Brysha: “un amor hacia lo que haces y con quién lo haces”. Eso es el distintivo que da sentido al propio blog y que contribuye a hacerlo, a fin de cuentas, único en el mundo.

Las fotografías, de La Petite Nymphéa, Soft&Grey, Collage Vintage y On the Racks respectivamente, son las preferidas o se encuentran entre los posts favoritos de sus fotógrafos.

Searching the blogsphere: On the Racks

Hoy comienzo una nueva sección: Searching the blogsphere, en la que semana a semana iré enseñándoos auténticas joyitas que voy encontrando en la blogosfera, sobre todo de streetstyle.

Y no hay mejor forma de inaugurarla que con uno de mis últimos descubrimientos: On the Racks. Con una calidad de fotos muy buena, esta chica de San Francisco postea a diario looks en los que mezcla capas, colores y estampados. Posee un estilo muy ecléctico en el que juega con prendas low-cost como Zara o Asos y algunas marcas más caras como Alexander Wang.

Today I start a new section: Searching the blogsphere, in which week per week I will be showing you really precious treasures I´m finding on the net, especially about streetstyle.

And there´s no better way to open this than with one of my last discoverings: On the Racks. With an amazing quality of photos, this girl from San Francisco daily updates her blog with looks that result from a good mixture of layers, colours and prints. Her style is very eclectic and plays with low-cost items of Zara or Asos and more expensive brands such as Alexander Wang.
